The tennis stadium at Rothenbaum in Hamburg is a historic venue for international tennis tournaments and a significant landmark of German sports. Since its opening in 1892, it has witnessed numerous historic moments and has continuously evolved.

History and Development

The first German Tennis Championships were held in 1892 at the 'Eisenbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst' complex. In 1897, the 'German Open' was opened to international players for the first time, marking the beginning of a new era in German tennis.

In 1928, the tennis stadium at Rothenbaum was inaugurated and quickly became one of the most important tennis centers in Germany. In 1956, the Centre Court was expanded to accommodate 5,000 spectators, making the tournament more international.

Modern Developments

In recent years, the stadium has undergone extensive modernization. One of the most notable innovations is the unique membrane roof over the Centre Court, installed in 1998. This roof protects spectators from the elements and allows matches to continue even in bad weather.

Current Significance

Today, the tennis stadium at Rothenbaum is not only the venue for the Hamburg Open but also a cultural hub that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The combination of tradition and state-of-the-art facilities makes it a unique place for both tennis fans and players alike.
