In 1954, the Niedersachsenstadion was inaugurated. Designed in the shape of a huge shell, similar to the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, the arena was the second largest stadium in West Germany (after the Berlin Olympic Stadium) and had space for 73,000 spectators. Built as a multifunctional sports venue, the stadium quickly became a symbol of the post-war boom and the economic miracle in Hanover and the entire Federal Republic of Germany. In the same year, Hannover 96 celebrated the German football championship, while the national team won its first world championship title.
